Houzz Inc., the leading platform for home renovation and design, today announced the community’s picks for Best Of Houzz 2017, a homeowner-to-homeowner guide to the top home builders, architects, interior designers, landscape pros and other residential remodeling professionals on Houzz from cabinetry or roofing pros to painters.

“We are so pleased to award Best of Houzz 2017 to this incredible group of talented and customer-focused professionals,” said Liza Hausman, vice president of Industry Marketing for Houzz. “Each of these businesses was singled out for recognition by our community of homeowners and design enthusiasts for helping to turn their home improvement dreams into reality.”

The Best Of Houzz is awarded annually in three categories: Design, Customer Service and Photography. Design award winners’ work was the most popular among the more than 40 million monthly users on Houzz. Customer Service honors are based on several factors, including the number and quality of recent client reviews. Architecture and interior design photographers whose images were most popular are recognized with the Photography award.

A “Best Of Houzz 2017” badge appears on winners’ profiles, as a sign of their commitment to excellence. These badges help homeowners identify popular and top-rated home professionals in every metro area on Houzz. Winners will be announced globally throughout the month.

Welcome Mo!

Mohamed Alhethail joined the MCD team a couple months ago. His experience has been working for Concrete Traditions, so he knows about prep, pouring, install and finishing. He also worked for Bullet Proof Welding in steel erection, and for Natural Factors as a remodeler. Mo is OSHA Certified and is a Certified Disaster Worker. He works Friday and Saturday nights working security as a bouncer as well. He was a referral from another employee Fletcher and he has already proven to be a great addition to the team, and like many of our employees, he has an awesome commute living in Issaquah. He is a “jack of all trades” and will be out on the job site working along side the rest of the team. He loves working construction because you get to break things during demo (and then rebuild them of course!) He loves tools of all kinds, enjoys music, collecting knives, and spending time with family, and absolutely hates Brussels sprouts. His ultimate vacation spot would be in the Bahamas or in Fiji.

On the Job.

Some things you may not know about Mo:

1. He can make some seriously good pancakes, and should be given an award for cooking his lady dinner!

2. If he could be any animal it would be a bear and he would take advantage of hibernation!

3. His favorite movie of all time is the Perfect Storm.

Our Interior Designer – Carrie Kinkade

carrie proOne of our most recent hires is Carrie Kinkade! She works as one of our interior designers and we were so thrilled to have her join the MCD team. She received a BFA in Interior Design from the Northwest College of Art and has worked as a Designer and Project Manager for multiple companies including Old Time Woodwork, Rainier Woodworking Company, Coyote Design Architecture and Planning PLLC, and most recently before coming to us at Renewal Remodels and Additions. She has strong management skills as well as being incredibly hardworking, creative, and detail oriented. She has also won a number of awards for her work including most recently in 2016 winning the REX Entire House under 150k, and REX Entire House 150-300k categories as well as the BIAW Whole house under 150k and the 2016 People’s Choice awards.  She loves working in the design world because she get’s to do her passion, and her hidden talent is selecting the most expensive anything when she goes into a store. Ha, we like to think that means she has excellent taste!

Fun Facts about Carrie:

Her favorite movie of all time is Fried Green Tomatoes.

Her hobbies include Beekeeping, woodworking, and sport bike riding.

Her ultimate vacation spot is Maui (though we are trying to convince her that Puerto Vallarta is really the best!)

Employee Spotlight – Jake Lindahl

Jacob, or Jake as he is more often called,  joined MCD as a carpenter last month! If you haven’t met him yet, I’m sure you will see him around soon. He loves spending time with his family, lounging around with his kids and dogs as well as playing and watching sports. If he wasn’t working construction he would most likely be smithing. His favorite part about both jobs being that he gets to work with his hands. Now it is probably too early to start asking what his all time favorite MCD moment has been but we look forward to having him work for us and he is a great addition to the team!

Jake has given us some of the most unique answers yet to the bizarre questions we have asked:

If he could be any animal it would be a rhinoceros.

His favorite movie of alltime is Princess Bride.

If he could meet one person in history, he would choose Leif Erikson. (For those of you who don’t know who that is, was an Icelandic explorer and the first known European to have discovered North America, before Christopher Columbus even!)

2016 ARDA Global Choice Award goes to MCD!

It isn’t every day that you are able to win such an award as the American Residential Design Awards 2016 Global Choice Award! We couldn’t be more thrilled and honored to be recognized! Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for our project and helped us get first place! Our interior designer, Emily Treece was able to go to the award ceremony in Colorado. Take a look!

Meet our summer admin help!

If you stop by the office this summer, you will likely see Julia Vehar, our newest employee who will be joining us for the summer helping out the ladies in the office. She is originally from California but goes to school at the University of Rochester in New York, and is in Seattle for the summer taking a class at the University of Washington.

A couple of quick facts about Julia:

1. She absolutely hates fruit, but loves to cook!

2. Her ultimate vacation spot is Prague.

3. If she could be any animal, she would be a cat that thinks it is a dog.

Meet our Summer Help!

Jake 1

We are excited to have Jake helping us out on the job sites for the summer while school isn’t in session. If Jake looks familiar, it is because he is Becki and Steve’s son! This is his first job and he was hired on as a laborer.  His hobbies include dirt biking and hunting, and of course like his family, vacationing to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!

Some fun and unusual facts about Jake:

1. His least favorite food is kale.

2. If he were an animal he would choose to be a shrimp… we asked for a reason, and he didn’t have one, but hey it makes him unique!

3. If he could meet one person in history it would be George Washington.

A Trip to Dale Chihuly’s Boathouse

Instead of our birthday lunches at the office to celebrate our employee birthdays of the month, the bosses decided to celebrate Tyler and Fletcher’s birthday with a private tour of Dale Chihuly’s Boathouse and hot shop in Seattle. His boathouse is normally closed to the public so it was quite the opportunity to see his old personal residence, watch his employees at work creating spectacular pieces of art, and enjoying drinks and appetizers.  The highlights were definitely the 85′ long dining room table made out of single tree, the indoor swimming pool with a glass art bottom, and the 20′ long
aquarium where fish swim along his sculptures.

Architect Dan – Employee Spotlight!

dan 1

Dan Buchser joined the MCD team just over a year ago as our associate architect on staff. We are forever grateful to Emily for recruiting him to act as the “New Bob” in the office. His first real job was back working as a construction laborer for a residential contractor, and he worked at Callison as an architect so he has lots of experience in the construction and design world. Heck his favorite movie as a kid was Swiss Family Robinson.. totally appropriate for an architect I think! He loves working at MCD because of all of us awesome coworkers (his words, not ours, we swear!) And although he isn’t a Coug… he is our only “true” husky in the office… and we have sort of forgiven him for the poor life choice.

Working for us the past year and two months some of his favorite moments include the company trip down to Puerto Vallarta at Villa Estrella Mar and the breakfasts there. (Anyone who has been knows the French toast is out of this world). But actual favorite work moment was seeing Jennifer Gallop’s face after they finally got their permit! Woo! He also had a pretty epic “site meeting” in Alpental with Pete… though we wonder how much work was actually done. He loves gifts from clients, especially big boxes of cookies!

Dan likes to spend his time hiking, camping, watching football, and flying drones. He is also really into photography, and his secret talent is cooking! Dan also recently became a dad to the cutest kid out there. We are all so excited for him!

dan 2

Things you may not know about Dan:

He hates pickles… or anything that is pickled.

On the job, his biggest pet peeve is dealing with permit comments with lazy jurisdictions.

If he won the lottery his would spend it on a new truck, moving his parents closer to family, and getting a college fund going for Carson!

Another Kathy joins the team!

Kathy B 2

Another Kathy joins MCD, so we are making her go by “Kate” to limit confusion around the office!  She has been working for MCD now for a little over 3 weeks as our newest interior designer. She loves working in the design world because it is so rewarding to take a client’s vision and create the reality. As for being rewarded, the best gift she has gotten from a client was a basket full of travel lotions and sun wear for an upcoming vacation. If she wasn’t working construction she would be doing charity work in Costa Rica, which also happens to be her favorite vacation spot. So far at MCD, her favorite moment has been with our other interior designer Emily, taping out fireplaces on site! The photo was pretty hilarious. Her hobbies include playing tennis and horseback riding, while her secret talent is closet organization. (Mine too, I feel like we will bond over this) Kate’s biggest pet peeve is related to this, in that she can’t stand hangers that get caught on each other! She should also probably be given an award for time spent on deciding what shoes to wear.

Kathy B 3

Things you may not know about Kate yet:

If she could be any animal it would be an Ostrich!

If she could go back and meet anyone in history she would choose Audrey Hepburn.

Her favorite movie of all time is Love Actually.
